Genital Warts Diagnosis
Genital warts diagnosis is a very simple thing to do and sometimes can be done in the comfort of your home. For professional advice however, medical diagnosis of genital warts is recommended. Genital warts diagnosis is basically done by checking the appearance of genital cauliflower like bumps and swellings in forms of pink, red and gray around the genital area. The patients themselves would be able to detect these and doctors sometimes treat them without any further testing.
Other types of wart diagnosis are actually to check for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) that causes genital warts. Most common but not so reliable test is by Pap smear. Pap smears identify abnormal cells that may be a sign of cancer. However, Pap smear itself cannot ascertain the diagnosis of HPV infection unless further and advanced tests are carried out.
Genital warts can also be diagnosed through a simple visual examination. During the diagnosis, acetic acid (vinegar) is rubbed or swabbed on the penis or cervix for ladies to check for HPV lesions. If a whitish area appears, it means the existence of HPV. The whiter it is, the worse it is.
If still in doubt, another genital warts diagnosis which is almost similar to Pap smear will be conducted that is colposcopy. The name comes from colposcope which is used to check the cervix for evidence of HPV. Colposcope is an electric microscope which is positioned about 30 cm from the vagina. During the diagnosis, acetic acid is placed on the cervix to make sure light does not pass through the cervical cells. Using the colposcopy, the doctor or gynaecologist will focus on areas where light does not pass through. Abnormal cervix condition will then be visible as white and the whiter it is, the worse the condition is.
Another more complicated genital warts diagnosis is by doing the biopsy of cervical tissues. Cervix will be swabbed to take a little sample of the cervical tissue and then examining them carefully under the microscope. HPV infection is confirmed with the existence of HPV genetic materials.
